"The Night Before Christmas" is credited with creating the modern image of Santa Claus as a jolly fat man in a red suit. The original Santa Claus was St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children. The Dutch spelling of Sint Nikolaas became corrupted to Sinterklaas, which in Anglican is Santa Claus.
